Busy Bees

This week we are learning all about bees and how important they are to our world. We had a special guest come in yesterday to show us how we get our honey and tell us more about how pollination works. We have been busy worker bees this week!

Scientists in School-Backyard Bugs

Our Backyard Bugs visit from Scientists in School was fantastic.

The students rotated through 5 centres.
1.  Dramatize the life cycle of the monarch butterfly from egg to larvae to pupa (chrysalis) to butterfly.  Drinking nectar.
Thank you Alana's mom for helping at this centre.

2.  Build an insect with 3 body parts, 6 legs, 2 antennae, 2 wings and eyes.
Thank you Seth's mom for helping at this centre.

3.  How does an insect eat?  Use an eyedropper to suck up nectar.  Look at meal worms.
Thank you Scientist for helping at this centre.

4.  Looking at insects up close.  Is it an insect, is it not?
Thank you Ms. Embree for helping at this centre.

5.  How insects camouflage.
Thank you Madison's mom for helping at this centre.

Library Fiasco

Sometimes asking 4 and 5 year olds for help doesn't pan out.  We had a couple of students bring up the returned library books and instead of putting them on the return cart, they so carefully put them back on the library shelves.  A librarians nightmare.

So......if your child doesn't have a book today it's because we weren't able to retrieve it.  Some were found but Mrs. Nelson needs more time to locate the rest.  We appreciate your patience.

JK Reading program

Mrs. Mah-Doucette is back!!!
She would like all the JK 'Read At Home' books returned to school.  She is going to spend a couple of weeks reassessing the students letter awareness and reading readiness before sending home the books again. We are in the home stretch of JK and want the students to be on the right track.

Please ensure your child has a refillable water bottle every day.  It is getting warmer and they need to stay hydrated.

Mrs. Mah-Doucette Returns

If Kids Ruled The World

This was a fun book we read today that brought about an interesting discussion.  What would your child do if he/she ruled the world? Perhaps ask them at dinner tonight.

Need a graduation gift?

The SK's will be 'graduating' to grade one soon.  Why not give them a Highview Hawks t-shirt?
Just something to think about.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

This week we are learning all about reducing, reusing and recycling. We are talking about how we can make less garbage and compost more! By the end of this week we will have our very own Kindergarten composter up and running. If you have chance tonight at dinner, talk to your kids about what kinds of stuff can go into a composter. Where do we put with the little scraps of food we don't finish on our plate? Have a great night, Earth Day is comping up soon!

Ms. Embree

Ms. Embree has been teaching in our classroom every Thursday since the beginning of the year.  She is in her second year of teacher's college and will be doing her 'teaching block' in April.  Ms. Embree has planned a month's worth of fun activities based on bugs and the environment.  The two of us will be working together throughout her block.  I look forward to seeing the children engaged in the activities and tasks she has planned.
