Air Canon

Mrs. Mah-Doucette made an air canon but didn't tell the students (or me!) what it was.  The students were asked to guess.  She played Hangman to help them figure it out.  With only two blanks left, I still had no idea.  Mrs. Mah-Doucette demonstrated how it worked with a student and then had me close my eyes and tried it on me.  It was very cool.  We discussed how much air is in the large tub but is forced out a small hole on the bottom and that's why you get that puff of air that blows a cup off our heads.

Out Of This World

We are starting a unit on space.  Our five literacy centres include playdough with galaxies (marbles) and aliens (Go Go's), mixing colours to make a sun and adding a cut and paste rocketship, magnetic white boards spelling 'space' words and friends names, working on two space poems and, oh yeah, a bears den at the block centre.

Beach Day Was A Blast

We learned a fun beachy dance - Kokomo.  I videotaped it and am just trying to think of a way to share it with you.

Chinese New Year

Mrs. Mah-Doucette shared information about Chinese New Year with the children.  She read a story about this special holiday and discussed the symbolism of red and gold, told a story about how the 12 animals got chosen for each year and shared her emperor and empress outfits with the students.

Red and golf for good luck

Mrs. Mah-Doucette's wedding dress

Ms. MacDearmid had lots of questions about how the gift giving of money works

Ukelele Concert

Two former Highview students returned to perform for our students.  With just a ukelele and a guitar, the two girls sang, with beautiful harmony.  They also did impromptu lessons on how easy it is to learn to play (4 chords can pretty much cover it).  They sang Royals, Stay With Me and a medley to demonstrate that 4 chords can do the trick!  The Kindergarten students said it was awesome, cool and incredible.

Needs vs. Wants

Mrs. Wright told us about her love of purses and shoes as she was discussing needs vs. wants with the students.  She read Lily's Purple Plastic Purse by one of my favourite author's, Kevin Henkes.

Ukelele Concert

The bigger kids are putting on a show for us tomorrow.

Library Tomorrow

Blue Spruce

We read two more books.  One about hockey and the other about building and perseverance.  Ask you child to tell you about each and which they liked best.

Chillin'

These girls are enjoying reflecting on our year so far.  They are looking at photos of  students in the classroom and our many adventures outdoors.

Beach Day

Friday is beach day.  Wear beachy things.  M.J. made us a list.
Flip flops, a dress (t-shirt and shorts) and hat are perfect.  Leave the sunscreen at home.

Valentine's

Wear red, white, pink or purple tomorrow.
Bring your cards.

Blue Spruce Club

Today's book was a true story about a musician who plays in the subway.  People passing by are too much in a hurry and don't stop to listen.  The little boy in the book tries to get his mom to stop and listen.  By the end of the book the mom realizes that she needs to 'take time to stop and smell the roses', so to speak and ends up dancing to music in the kitchen with her son.

Homework Time!!!

This round of star of the day is "Simple Machines"
Your job is to google what a simple machine is (nothing you plug in) and then take your child on a treasure hunt around the house for a:

Make sure your child can carry it and explain what type of machine it is.
Remember:  a machine is something that makes our job easier

Blue Spruce Club

The kindergarten students are all part of the Blue Spruce Club. The club meets daily and we read books written by Canadian authors. The students vote on which book is their favorite. The Book with the most votes will be announced in May and gets a Blue Spruce award on their book. Children from all across Canada are participating.
Here is what we have read so far. Ask your child to tell which is their favourite book and why.
